Beginning our dissection of the human being, from an intangible viewpoint, we identify first that which we know. A self is a unit, it is one. It may be part of a larger whole, or it may be the largest sum of units in any particular dimension. The first self we can isolate is the BODY. This is an organic vehicle produced in the body of our mother, using her egg and the biological father’s sperm. It began as one cell, formed out of two half cells that were joined together at conception. Mother fed it material that she consumed for about nine months, at which time, our body was brought out of mother’s body and began to work on its own. Our mother continued then to feed us from her own body, (or with a similar nutritive substance to that which normally is produced by her breasts,) until we were able to consume nutrition in the way we do now, by eating it. Our body grows as we feed it, until it reaches a point of full size at maturity. Beyond this point, we can only get fatter. The material body is basically a collection of materials that forms a complete unit. None of it was ours before we ate it, but it belongs to us now, until we die, when the materials will feed other organisms that are still living and growing. This body is but one of the Seven Selves. We shall call it the Whole Physical Body.
Upon further analyses, we can find that this body is made up of two intangible parts. How is this so? Well, we can control only part of it, the other part does not respond to our will, but seems to have a mind of its own. (This is one of the reasons why we fear thinking about things like this that make us dig into our true selves.) We can move our arms and legs in a limited range. We can turn our heads up and down and around, again in a limited range. We can twist and turn our backs and hips in limited ways. We can basically cause almost every muscle in our bodies to respond to our will with very little training, but this is far from the complete control of the body. We shall call this body that responds to our will the Passive physical Body, as it is passive in submission to the will. This is the body that does what we wish it to do, for the most part. This is a self that we have direct control over most of the time.
And what of the other part of this physical body? This is the self that apparently has a mind of its own. How can it have a mind of its own when it is part of us? This is a part of ourselves that we do not know of, but it makes no sense to be afraid of it. After all, we have to live with it. This body does things to keep us going that we don’t have to concentrate on all the time. We should be thankful we were created this way. It does not require any concentration to keep our hearts beating, or our lungs breathing. It requires no thought at all to digest our food and send the nutrients to the places in the body they are needed. It takes no focus of mind to find and fight infectious invaders, or to heal physical damage to our bodies. This is all done for us automatically. Our hair grows, our fingernails grow, our cells are constantly being replaced with new material, and we don’t have to think about doing these things at all. It can be a trouble when we suffer pain that we cannot shut off, or hear noises that we wish we could turn down. It is a bother to endure itches and irritations, headaches, upset stomachs, nausea, runny noses, etc., but it does give us more freedom to do the things that we want. It may not be something that has always been out of our control anyway. These thought processes or programs to run our bodies may have been learned back in the time in the womb; that time which none of us can really remember. It is a part of who we are, a part of our self. We can learn to control things more if we really want to, or need to. Much more study should be done on the subject once people overcome the fear of it. New ways to overcome bad habits, fight deadly diseases, even the keys to immortality may come from such study. For the purposes of this work though, it is enough to identify this as the physical self that acts on its own. We shall call it the Active Physical Body, and it is the third of the Seven selves to be defined and known.
These three thus far are the physical parts of the true whole one self that is the human being. Already we have found three distinct parts. One is the sum of two lessor halves, but is a whole unto itself. Together, these three make up the physical side of the human creature.
As the order of the creation would have it, the intangible elements of the human being are also three in number, and related in much the same way. The study of these three is limited to pure theory, as it is impossible to truly define anything intangible. These are the elements and parts of the self, which set us apart from the rest of the animals. In physical form there is much that is similar to the other creatures living upon this planet. In mind and spirit, however, there is very little that can even remotely be considered similar to other forms of life.
In regards to terminology: "Mental" is used to describe things of the Mind. The term "Spiritual" is used to describe things not only of the mind, but of the soul as well, and also applies to those things which have no physical body. For the purpose of this work, "Mental" will be the term more applicable to describing the human being, as this is one in possession of both a mind and a body. While spirit may be an equal to mind, the intangibility of the subject is difficult enough to attempt description without further complications of even more intangible subjects.
The first of these mental three, then, is the Whole Mental Body. We shall call it a body because it is a unit of the self. This part must contain the Mind, and also the Spirit. This is a unit that is also made up of two lessor halves. The first is the Conscious mind. This is the part of our minds that we know of, and exist as most of the time. When we think, we use this mind. It contains what we remember, what we know of, how we perceive ourselves. It also is the basis from which we perceive everything else, and express ourselves to the world we live in. This is the part which contains the greatest part of the Will; that which is in control of the Passive physical body, and unaware of the actions of the Active physical body. As one of the Seven Selves, we shall call this part the Conscious Mental Body. This mental body, and the passive physical body, are all that most human beings ever know of themselves. Most often, they are not even considered to be two, but rather one, which the person refers to as "ME".
The other half of the whole mind is that which is like unto the active physical body, in that we rarely know much about it or how it works. This is the Subconscious Mental Body. This is the part that keeps track of everything the conscious mind doesn’t. This is where the programs for running the body twenty-four hours a day are kept. It is thought that the subconscious mind also keeps track of everything ever perceived. Every word of every book you ever read, every image from every moment of your entire life, is believed to be stored in the subconscious mind. This is where the dreams come from, as well as the stray thoughts and feelings that we often get. As is the case with the active physical body; there is much study needed to fully understand who and what we are, if it can ever be known. It is even believed by some, that this hidden mental body can be read like a motion picture film, providing a record of everything that the individual experienced during a lifetime. It is believed that this is the means by which GOD is able to judge the soul for merit, as nothing will be hidden. All the more reason to know now exactly what it contains.
To this point, we have broken the human being down into six separate selves; four, which are virtually individual units, and two that are formed of two halves. These six are symbolic of a concept that is ancient. The word "Sex" is a prefix in Latin that means "Six". This is derived from the geometric symbology of six, being two interlocking triangles (as the Star of David). This is symbolic of the sexes joined in union. Each is a triangle, which itself is a creative trinity. The upright triangle represents the male, with a penis and two testicles. The inverted triangle represents the female, whose sexual organs are the reverse; the uterus/vagina and two ovaries. The number six is relevant to sex and the sexes in many other ways, but the true form is found with the number Seven. The Seventh Self is the sum of both of the whole selves of Mind and Body. This is the True Whole Self, as it is the one formed out of six. This is the one which rises out of the union of the opposites which are whole pairs of opposites, just as life arises out of the union of the sexual opposites. The understanding of this symbology is necessary to the understanding of the self and the sexes.
