Robotron 2084:
and other Shooter games

Robotron, created in 1982, by Eugene Jarvis, is classified as an arena shooter. The player starts in the center of the screen, surrounded by hordes of enemies. You survive by moving quickly and carefully, shooting everything possible to get to the next level. Contact with any enemy is the loss of a life. Not only this, but there are also projectiles some enemies fire, and obstacles called electrodes that will end your life just as quickly if you touch them. This is a very fast paced game. The arcade machines had dual joysticks as the only controls. Moving and firing in 8 directions, independent of each other. The graphics and sounds aren't much by todays standards, but the gameplay is extremely intense and addictive.

In 1990, Jarvis refined the idea further into a game called "Smash TV". The two games are basically the same, except in Robotron the arena is full of enemies to begin with, while Smash TV started the player in an empty room and the enemies appear gradually. There is also the added element of surprise involved, and not knowing when the level is going to end.

You can play the original Robotron on your computer by using the arcade emulator, MAME.
There are versions and frontend programs to run on any operating system, which can be easily found by searching.

Below are all the downloadable games I have found with this same type of intense gameplay. Some are retro-styled remakes while others have more advanced graphics as well as possible mouse/joystick support. Many are freeware, the others are demos.

The images lead to larger screenshots. Titles lead to a download page for the game.

This excellent game allows you to select the level and type of game you want to play. There are some Robotron style arena levels and also corridor exploration maps. Beyond those included, you can easily make your own or download more from the net.
Though the name might seem to indicate otherwise, this is not a multiplayer game.

Alien Deathmatch 2 Alien Deathmatch 2 , by Jayenkai.
- - freeware - -
As you might guess, there are new types of enemies, bonuses, special features, and effects in this sequel to an already great game. It also has support for much larger maps and a built-in editor to create and test your own levels.

Artificial Nature Artificial Nature , by JPH Wacheski.
- - freeware - -
This is quite an interesting game that requires a different strategy. To win, you must collect 100 stars, which are sometimes dropped by enemies you shoot, and deposit them at a central base. You only have one life, and the stars are also your armor, of sorts.

Blitzatron Blitzatron , by Marcus Incitti.

A very faithful remake of the original. It took me several months to find this game and someone from Retro Remakes forum finally sent it to me. I couldn´t find a way to make a screenshot, but it looks the same as the original in the 3 images at the top of this page.

This fantastic game is just awesome and addictive fun. The name link above is to the latest demo version. If you are having trouble getting through Quest mode, check here for help.

Crimsonland v1.4

This link will lead you to the last freeware version. It doesn´t have the Quest mode, but there is no time limit either.

This file and "Meat War" below were found at the website of $LEp()y, who also provided the link to "Kill Deal".

D-Bug D-Bug , by Diezel Power.

Other than some great, high detail graphics, basically the same as this game is basically the same as Crimsonland, but with a smaller play area and fewer but faster enemies. It is also shareware with a time-limited demo.

Death Cage 2 Death Cage 2 , by Fanotherpg.
- - freeware - -
In this zombie survival game, you start with a nice selection of 8 different weapons, though ammo is limited. The enemy movement is surprisingly more intelligent than other games of this type, which makes it interesting. Ammunition seems to be the only pick-up or bonus to be found, so you really need to watch your health. 640x480 resolution is fine for this game, but it will not display in full screen.

Debrysis Debrysis , by OUEO.
- - freeware - -
This game stands out as different in that the enemies are mostly snake-like. You can't destroy them with single shots and it is easy to get trapped. There are lots of great weapons and power-ups to help out though, as well as several different arenas to play in.

Echoes Echoes , by Binary Zoo.
- - freeware - -
This happens to be more of an Asteroids-type game than Robotron, but just as fast paced, and more than rocks to shoot at. You can use 8-keyboard only, mouse aiming, or even joysticks for control. You only get one life, but there are pick-ups to recharge your shields and increase fire power. Very fun game.

Evil Invasion Evil Invasion , by VH Games.
- - demo - -
This is sort of an RPG that tries to be a Crimsonland with magic spells instead of guns. It looks and sounds good enough, but I thought it was too slow and repetitive to be any fun.

G.A.S. G.A.S. {Generic Arena Shooter} , by "worstplayer" (?)

Very unique game with excellent graphics and gameplay. Your ship is trapped in a circular space where you must defend against several widely different types of enemies, and asteroids! I only read some posts on a forum made by the developer, and no real name was listed.

Grid Wars Grid Wars , by Marcus Incitti.
- - freeware - -
When I first saw this, I thought it was a space shooter. Well, it is sort of, but it has Robotron firing and movement controls, and the same type of relentless action.

Horrorween Horrorween , by DGDev Team.
- - freeware - -
Another Crimsonland style game set in a graveyard. The fog effects and graphics are decent, but very boring and slow gameplay with almost zero bonuses and power-ups.

Kill Deal Kill Deal , by Discus Games.
- - demo - -
Another excellent Crimsonland-style game, but with RPG elements. Very tough! There are several starting characters though, with different skills and weapons. Russian and English language files included.

Krisotron Krisotron , by Rebel Box Games.
- - demo - -
While the graphics may not be very advanced, the gameplay is tense and challenging, with enemies appearing all over the screen in waves. Collecting bonuses allows you to upgrade your weapons and other attributes, which you will certainly need in order to survive. The demo for PC or Xbox is free, but the entire game is only one dollar to purchase!

Larva Mortus Larva Mortus , by Rake In Grass.
- - demo - -
This is an RPG with multiple missions of randomly generated rooms. Your player gathers new weapons, ammo, and gains experience points to improve skills as you progress. Very simple, though the rooms can be quite small and hectic.

MagneTron MagneTron , by Steven De Toni.
- - freeware - -
As the author states, this game draws much influence from both Robotron and Llamatron. What I can say is there are some really unique and interesting enemies that are quite a challenge. There is also a nice selection of powerups to help you out through the 30 levels. Sound and graphics are well done. Very well designed and executed all around.

Meat War Meat War , by Linnik Stas ($noopy).

This is an excellent Crimsonland remake. The quality is not at as great, but it has some features that Crimsonland does not and is highly recommended.

Mechatron Mechatron , by Ray Norrish.

The best Robotron remake ever. This has excellent graphics, better sounds, and also includes a level editor! You can find the latest version at this website. You don't want to miss this final finished version, with online high score posting and support for many joystick and gamepad types. An awesome game all around!

Mikatron Mikatron , by Mike DuVall.
- - freeware - -
The worst Robotron remake ever (in my opinion). The control system requires the use of 8 keys for movement. Likewise, firing uses another 8 keys on the numberpad. This can be changed by editing the .ini file, but I couldn't figure out how to do that, so it was pretty much un-playable.

Mojotron Mojotron , by Craig Timpany.
- - freeware - -
This is not at all a Robotron remake and wasn't meant to be. It is, however, the same type of arena shooter as Robotron is, and just as fun to play. This game is also open enough that almost anything can be changed if you are interested in doing so. Graphics, sounds, level design and names can all be modified just like Doom.

Mutant Storm Mutant Storm , by PomPom Games.
- - demo - -
I am not sure this game is officially available for download or sale anymore. The download link is not to the developer's website. It uses the keyboard for movement and the mouse to aim and fire. There are quite the wide variety of enemies and rooms to fight through. Sounds, graphics, and gameplay are all very good, with some random and limited power-ups available. It seems that different game modes can be unlocked, but I have not progressed far enough to do so yet.

NaaC NaaC , by Bloody Monkey.
- - freeware - -
I didn´t enjoy this one so much because the arena is very small and the enemies quite repetitive. Still, it is very high quality freeware and has some interesting differences that make it worthwhile to try.

Nation Red Nation Red , by Diezel Power.
- - demo - -
I really enjoyed the first few levels of this great looking game. The play area is very small, however, and it relies heavily upon melee combat that I was not prepared for. The developer even states that the difficulty verges on 'impossible' before finishing the 20 levels of quest mode. If you want a serious challenge, then this is for you.

R-Tronic Robotron R-Tronic , by Trevor "Smila" Storey.
- - freeware - -
This is well made and could be a really fun game, but I am used to controlling movement with my left hand and firing with the right. The author made it the other way around and gave no option to change it. It was impossible for me to adapt to, so I had to give up on it.

R.I.P. 2 R.I.P. 2: Strike Back , by White Elephant.
- - demo - -
The graphics and sounds of this game are pretty good. You get to play as one of three characters with different abilities. I went through 5 levels in less than 5 minutes, and found it not to be very challenging at all. Might be a good game for kids though.

R.I.P. 3 R.I.P. 3: The Last Hero , by White Elephant.
- - demo - -
This is a good game, and much better than R.I.P 2. The enemy appearances are simple, but a nice challenge. The levels are also much longer, (though not larger,) with more enemies and even some big bosses to fight.

Robotron 2084 Robotron 2084 , by An Ly.

This is a nicely made free game. Almost everything is different in this version, with all new graphics and additions to gameplay. It uses a combination of the mouse for aiming and the keyboard for moving that is different but cool.

Robotron Blitz Robotron Blitz , by Zi-Xiao Liang.

A super hyped-up and totally impossible game to play, for anyone as slow as I am. It's also a free game, and if the original Robotron didn't kick your ass hard and fast enough, this version certainly will!

Robotron RRC Robotron RRC , by Dan Richardson.

This game was an entry in the Retro Remakes 2004 competition. The gameplay and controls are good, with graphics and sounds that are better than the original. There are only 6 levels so it's a fairly short game, but there is a tough boss battle at the end to make it more interesting.

Sabretron SabreTron , by Havard Spring.
- - freeware - -
There are two versions of this game, Mini and Maxi. Both are basically the same except for the size of the graphics. (This also affects the size of the arena, making the Maxi version a little more difficult.) These have refreshing new enemies, sounds, and even bosses to battle. Lots of fun, and being improved upon with each new version.

Ultratron Ultratron , by Puppy Games.
- - demo - -
The images, sounds, and even the background graphics in this game are wonderfully retro styled. There are more than 70 different types of enemies, assault levels, bonus levels, and boss battles to face, along with a nice selection of power-ups as well. What´s more, the game actually 'learns' as you play, making it even more challenging. Controls are excellent, and also reconfigurable if you prefer. The demo hardly gives a taste of how much fun this game can be, but this is a must have addition to any Robotron collection.

Youre Gonna Die You´re Gonna Die , by Paul Karpen.
- - freeware - -
This game is more like Smash TV than Robotron, but still similar enough to be included here. Nice retro style graphics and sounds. Lots of different power-ups make it even more interesting to play.

Zombie Road Metal Slug: Zombie Road , by Morning Toast.
- - freeware - -
Very similar to "Death Cage 2", but with more enemies and better graphics. While there are only 4 weapons, there seems to be plenty of ammo and health. A fun game with nice design, though 720x560 resolution and will not play in full-screen.

These games use an isometric rather than top-down view. They are also level/mission based with RPG elements mixed in, so not really arena shooters at all. Many of these have a survival mode which is pure arcade action, with loads of enemies and lots of frantic shooting to stay alive, so they are included here.

This game is also very similar to Alien Shooter, but with a different system of gaining experience to make your character stronger, along with some interesting power-ups.

Shadowgrounds Shadowgrounds , by Frozenbyte.

This highly detailed game has wonderful lighting and effects, but mouse aiming was terrible. Even with a powerful weapon I was ripped apart before ever being able to hit the enemies enough times. This is also a demo version. No fun playing with cheats all the time, so I never bought it.

Project Xenoclone Project Xenoclone , by Oniric Games.
- - demo - -
This one has very nice graphics and controls and was very exciting at first. I´ve played through about 10 levels so far and only encountered 4 different types of enemies. The only thing I don´t like about it is the combat system. You have only one weapon, which fires red or blue energy bursts according to which button of the mouse is pressed. Enemies are either red or blue, with blue shots only effective against red enemies, and vice versa. This can be frustrating and deadly with lots of enemies to fight.

Sigma Team

Alien Shooter Alien Shooter , by Sigma Team.

Even if the graphics are not very advanced by today´s standards, this is a great game with lots of action. One of my favorites and highly recommended. An updated version with newer graphics, named Alien Shooter Revisited is also available.

Alien Shooter 2: Vengeance Alien Shooter 2: Vengeance , by Sigma Team.
- - demo - -
A highly updated version of the original Alien Shooter, with awesome graphics and very detailed levels. Much more of an RPG than the original, with missions and individualized character development system. Several modes of play make this a good investment for anyone who likes this type of game. Alien Shooter Reloaded is a newer version which simplifies the skill system, adds some new levels and a new game mode.

Theseus Theseus , by Sigma Team.
- - Now Freeware! - -
If you liked Alien Shooter then you´ll like this one. It´s made by the same people and is basically the same game. There are different enemies and levels, and many outside areas that Alien Shooter doesn´t have.

Zombie Shooter Zombie Shooter , by Sigma Team.
- - demo - -
This is almost identical to Alien Shooter, except this time it puts you against hordes of zombies instead. It's also newer, with better graphics, details, and effects.

Zombie Shooter 2 Zombie Shooter 2 , by Sigma Team.
- - demo - -
The latest (and probably the last) game from Sigma Team, this is obviously a newer installment of Zombie Shooter, with some great new weapons and optional visual styles.

Animated crosshairs for all Sigma Team games are available Here. (9 KB)
